FAQ about glass and types of glass
May toughened glass be used for fall-preventing glazing?
Despite of many claims of the opposite, fall-preventing glazing with toughened glass incl. heat soak test is permissible. Since this type of glass is also mentioned in the documentation of our glass holders which are licensed by the building supervision, it is possible to glass cheaply and legitimately all over the country.
Plate Glass
Description: Float glass is a plate glass produced by a float process, also called float glass technology. This process has been applied in large scale since the 1960s, today, it provides almost 95 % of the overall production of plate glass. The German term 'spiegelglas' (plate glass) is defined in DIN 1249 (Flachglas im Bauwesen) and DIN 1259 (Glas) as applying to any plane transparent glass, however, it is often used interchangeably with float glass; another word is 'basisglas' (base glass) since it is used as a basis for plate glass of almost any kind. Preferential application areas: window panes, glass cabinets, glass furniture and mirrors.
Toughened Glass
Description: Toughened glass is a windowpane that is more resistant against temperature changes and bending, impact or shock. Breaking toughened glass disintegrates into little fragments, some of which are hooked to each other, so that there is less risk of injury.
Toughened glass looks just like normal, non-toughened glass, but in Germany it is provided with an acid mark in a corner that reads 'ESG'. Moreover, toughened glass cannot be processed any more once it has been toughened; any attempt to cut or drill the pane will destroy it. Preferential application areas: side and rear windows of vehicles, glass showers, glass furniture, fully glazed internal doors, glazed panels, balustrade glazing and glass walls.
Toughened and heat Soak tested Glass
Description: Corroding inclusions of nickel sulphide may cause instantaneous rupture of some toughened glass panes, especially in the first year after their making. Specific corrosion support by a heat soak test will break any such panes already before delivery. To perform this test, heat the toughened pane to a defined temperature and keep it at that level for a defined time. DIN 18 516 part 4 provides a maintenance time of eight hours at a mean temperature of 290 °C (± 10 ˚C). The Building Rules List A, part 1, 11.4.2 slightly deviates from DIN, p. e. by suggesting a maintenance time of four hours. Glass which has passed this test is (in Germany) labelled 'ESG-H'. Preferential application areas: safety applications like facade panes, constructive glass elements (e. g. supports and props).
Heat-Strengthened Glass
Description: Like toughened glass, heat-strengthened glass is submitted to a thermal strengthening process. It is slower cooled down, though. Therefore there are lower differences of tension between core and surfaces of the glass. The bending strength is located between that of float glass and that of toughened glass. Rupture will generate fissures that are leading radially from the rupture centre to the edges of the pane, like in any broken float glass. Heat-strengthened glass is more or less restricted to the making of laminated glass. Due to its large fragments, laminated safety glass made of heat-strengthened glass has a high residual load-carrying capacity. Preferential application areas: Heat-strengthened glass is mainly used in laminated safety glass for overhead or fall-preventing glazing.
Laminated satefy Glass
Description: Laminated safety glass (LSG) is a special type of laminated glass which corresponds to the least legal requirements. It consists of at least two panes, usually plate panes, and an inserted layer of tear-proof polyvinylbutyral film (PVB). Transparent plastic panes are rarely used, as rarely are other layers inserted, such as casting resins.
LSG is very safe due to its tear-proof PVB layer and its adhesive effect. A mechanical capacity overload (e.g., impact or shock) will break the glass, but its fragments will adhere to the PVB film. There is, hence, a residual load-carrying capacity, meaning less risk of fragmentation and injury. LSG is made under clean-room conditions. Glass and film are merged to an inseparable unit by exposing them to heat and high pressure in the autoclave. The incorporated film is usually transparent. Matt white or coloured films may create special effects. Applications of toughened LSG: balustrade glazing Applications of heat-strengthened LSG: overhead glazing, glass canopies, balustrade glazing, walk-on-able glass, windscreens. Applications of float glass LSG: balustrade glazing, walk-on-able glass, anti-vandal, bullet-resistant or blast-resistant glazing.
FAQ about glass clamps
Are windowpanes mounted with glass clamps able to slide?
This should not happen if you use high-quality glass clamps. If any problems occur, please, contact us. Close examination usually helps to detect small details which have caused the problem. Remounting the panes without technical changes is no solution!
May rubber inserts by different manufacturers be mixed or exchanged against each other?
In spite of almost identical sizes of some glass clamps, each manufacturer uses other materials for the rubber inserts. Furthermore, the depth of the rubber bed and the hardness of the rubber may considerably vary. Hence, almost any holders will suffer problems from using rubber inserts which do not perfectly match the panes in the long run.
May sliding panes just be secured with thicker rubber?
If windowpanes are sliding which were mounted with high-quality glass clamps, there is usually a technical problem behind. Attempts to solve it with thicker rubber will rarely succeed. Usually the nice look of the glass holders will be impaired by gaping parts. A reasonable and long-term solution will only be possible if you solve the nature of the problem.
May glass panes be mounted without securing pin/plate?
There is no need to use securing pins or plates for any glass clamps which allow using such parts. They are only one of many ways how to permanently secure the panes mechanically against falling. Please, note as well that any glazing which might fall must be mechanically secured. Nevertheless, you may secure it also with a strap below or by a different way of installation.
Are products with stainless steel effect surface suitable for outdoor use?
Products sold by the name Stainless Steel Effect are mostly made of die-cast zinc raw. The stainless steel look on the surface of these products is achieved by grinding and galvanic refining with a matt layer of chrome that is protected by thin varnish. Hence, according to our opinion, these products are not suitable for outdoor use. Effects of the weather and minor damage may impair their look in the long term.
Are products with colour-coated surface suitable for outdoor use?
Our colour-coated clamps are provided with plastic coating. It does not mean any trouble in outdoor use and may be treated like any fully coated structure of a kind that has been mounted outdoors for many years without problems.
Are products made of die-cast zinc raw suitable for outdoor use?
Parts made of die-cast zinc raw will behave outdoors like recently galvanised structures. The surface will turn matt and dull in the course of time, due to effects of the weather. The load-carrying capacity of the part will not be affected. Such parts are usually used in hot-dip galvanised structures.
FAQ about technology in general
May all pipe end caps be welded?
With a few exceptions, all of our solid plugs have now been converted to material 1.4301. All cast plugs with and without knurls are also made from this material. The material 1.4301 is easy to weld and therefore this question can now be answered with a clear yes.
Are handrail supports supplied screwed or welded?
All handrail supports with 12 mm straps that we are selling are made of 2 parts. The steel version has a round plate welded at the strap. The stainless steel version has a screwed strap, fixed with a screw securing at the right position to prevent twisting.
May the products from the plug system range be welded?
All poured parts from the plug system range, round or square, are made of the material 1.4301 and, hence, may well be welded.
Do you supply galvanised or hot-dip galvanised steel hinges?
The eyebolts, and all other components of our steel door hinges, which need not be welded to the rest of the construction are galvanized. Decisive for good corrosion protection is the sufficient layer thickness and not the process of galvanizing. However, since 2019 we have also offered some 2-way adjustable hinges with hot-dip galvanized components.
